"He is rear admiral of the white. He was in the Trafalgar action, and has been in the East Indies since; he has been stationed there, I believe, several years."
The Admiralty was divided into three ranks: rear-admiral, vice-admiral and admiral (in ascending order). Within each rank there were three grades: the blue, the white and the red (also in ascending order).
