This seems a very accurate and insightful discussion...   Written by jeffrey (10/3/2011 2:55 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Spite, resentment, rivalry?, penned by Lia

One of the unstated but implied clues into why such a handsome young lady as Elizabeth would not receive any offers of marriage has to be her vain and selfish personality. Another possible reason for the resentment between Elizabeth and Anne may be Anne's superior intellect, which she seems to have inherited from her Mother: (Ch 1)

"...... To Lady Russell, indeed, she was a most dear and highly valued god-daughter, favourite, and friend. Lady Russell loved them all, but it was only in Anne that she could fancy the mother to revive again......"

And again in Ch 1:
"..... since to them he must have owed a wife of very superior character to any thing deserved by his own. Lady Elliot had been an excellent woman, sensible and amiable; whose judgment and conduct,......"

AND AGAIN in Ch 1:
"..... but Anne, with an elegance of mind...."

It appears Anne got the greater portion of the brains in the family and Elizabeth got the greater portion of the looks. There would be smoldering resentment and jealousy for many years. Sir Walter and Elizabeth seem to be just looking for a way to jettison poor downtrodden Anne!
