Spite, resentment, rivalry?   Written by Lia (10/3/2011 1:33 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Elizabeth's treatment of Anne, penned by Jean B
Are you new?

I think you are reading it correctly.

I am midway through chapter 5 and was struck by Elizabeth's response to Anne's advice. Anne "seemed only to offend," and Elizabeth "indignantly answered...." Her tone is resentful.

Theirs seems to be the chilliest sibling relationship in Austen's work. You set me to wondering if there is a backstory. Is it only because Anne is so different, and Elizabeth, who is "very like"(1) Sir Walter, devalues her? Is Elizabeth guided by Sir Walter's treatment of her?

Or is there a hint of jealousy--that Anne has already received two offers of marriage (4), while Elizabeth has received none.
