"Vanity was the beginning and the end of Sir Walter Elliot's character; vanity of person and of situation," and he he is set as one of the silliest characters going.

Setting him up withhis strong sense self and looking at it as the action progresses is a funny and telling way to make our introduction to someone not very likable.
