We're at cross-purposes, but not to worry   Written by Tom P2 (11/2/2008 5:40 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, It is addressed, penned by Patricia P
Are you new?

I see a crucial difference between these two regrets:

"I wish my wealth matched his."

"If I had stood by him in the year six, I would now have a just share in the sense of achievement he has from his career, and no casual observer could suppose me mercenary."

The first flies in the face of what the novel says, as you've shown. The second doesn't, as far as I know, though perhaps it's too modern a view of the importance of being self-made.

Anyway, my original question has been clearly answered: nobody else was thinking along those lines. (And, in the words of Mr Gormsby, there's nothing wrong with that.) :-)
