Are you new?

With no likelihood of inheriting soon as Sir Walter was still a fit and well man, why would Mr Elliot marry a woman he had openly lived with and who very probably would bring no land or money (except what she'd inherit from her father in the future) to her marriage?

And if he did marry her, Mrs Clay would have to possess some formidable talents for flattery and persuasion.
