I mean it is possible that he is Irish and that the gossip is true - and it was just not important to mention earlier?

But I also wonder what the purpose of his nationality serves in the story? As TimLee mentions the possibility of cultural vanity in L. Dalrymple is very likely, but does it say something else/serve another purpose? This is probably not important, but I wonder still...
