Are you new?

There has been a lot disagrement over the years as to whether this means a share of ten thousand each or part of ten thousand. It can read either way but we know from Mansfield Park that Lady Bertram was considered lucky to have nailed Sir Thomas with Seven. Elizabeth clearly has no doubts about her own suitability for Baronet's Lady status. I had read it as ten before I ever knew there was a controversy. That sum would give her about 500 a year-not enough to run riot on but still she could afford to live in Bath though certainly not in the style to which she is accustomed. Elizabeth has some painful times ahead I think.
