Another possibility: Mrs Smith's 'tall Irish officer' Written by Tom P2 (10/31/2008 4:53 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Irish I dare say., penned by Rachel G

Mrs Smith in ch21 mentions a tall Irish officer whom she supposed to have been at the concert. Perhaps Lady Dalrymple had also heard him mentioned in gossip, saw a tall officer of some sort, and assumed he was the same man.
