|She might have a fighting chance - unlike some others

in consequence of the missive, Mrs. Clay's future, part 2, penned by Line
Eliza in S & S sinks slowly into poverty and despair and dies in disgrace leaving behind an illegitimate child who follows her mother into folly.
Lydia in P & P must be tracked down, extracted from the situation at great trouble and expense and her seducer must be bribed and coerced into marrying her.
Maria Rushworth in MP finally has to admit defeat, withdraw in disgrace and retire from society, living on her father's grudging charity, her only satisfaction that she prevented her lover from marrying her rival.
Mrs. Clay, on the other hand, just might have the wherewithal to convert her uncertain situation to marriage by her own wits and talents. At least, JA tells us, she is not completely out of the running.
I'd like to think that she just might pull it off - for as much joy as it would bring her - see first Mrs. Elliot.
