...that the Elliot girls were in exactly the same predicament as the Bennets in P&P or the Dashwoods in S&S - once their father died, any daughter who was not yet married would lose her home and the comfortable income that went with it.

Thanks for pointing out that it wasn't impossible that CW might become a baronet after all, but I always thought Mary was like Mrs. Bennet in P&P, complaining about "doing something" about the entail on Longbourn. Supposing CW *was* a candidate for a baronetcy, I'm sure that legally there was nothing the Musgroves or the Elliots could do to prevent it!
