When Anne chooses Wentworth, Mr E averts disaster very effectively by taking Mrs Clay as his mistress. I donīt know why this didnīt jump into my eye earlier - it really makes sense. Mr. Elliot is still trying to pull the strings concerning his heritage. But marrying her? Good question. Perhaps JA really wrote this with an twinkling eye, asking the reader: if two people being so sly as they were are trying to entangle each other - who will be the winner? Have to think it over again...
