I disagree (a little) - IMO Mrs. Clay...   Written by Line (10/30/2008 10:09 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Perhaps not conventionally pretty, penned by Tessa
Are you new?

...would be considered quite pretty by most people's standards, except for a few flaws which almost everyone has. It's only picky Sir Walter and Elizabeth who think she isn't. Remember Elizabeth Bennet? She was generally considered pretty (even a "famous local beauty") by almost everyone except Darcy at first, and remember what happened to *him*! ;-)

I'm also reminded of the saying "Familiarity is cruel to beauty, but kind to ugliness" (especially when accompanied by an agreeable and flattering personality!).
