Weird...   Written by Moni (10/30/2008 7:57 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, It is interesting, isn't it?, penned by CarolTS
Are you new?

I have just looked at the early passage again, where she is described by Anne, but it seems jumbled up. Is that what Anne thinks, or is she describing her as her father does?

CH. 5 -

"She (Anne) did not imagine that her father had at present an idea of the kind. ***Mrs. Clay had freckles, and a projecting tooth, and a clumsy wrist, which he was continually making severe remarks upon***, in her absence; but she was young, and certainly altogether well-looking,..."

I think Anne's opinion might be that she is altogether "well-looking" so she wasn't unattractive, except for how Sir Walter might refer to her shortcomings behind her back.

It's funny, I just didn't get the impression in any way that she was "handsome" at all, and it was a surprise to read Mrs Smith's description, given from knowing of her for a long time.
