That our first view of everyone is through Sir Walter's eyes - and we know he's not very impartial! But you're right, it clearly says in that quote that around town, Mrs. Clay was known as a handsome woman on the make for Sir Walter! Perhaps next time, my focus will be reading for descriptions of people that are NOT seen through the eyes of Sir Walter!
