I must admit that I donīt quite understand why Mr. Elliot and Mrs. Clay end up togehter. These are the questions I was pondering on:
1. Why did Mrs. Clay leave Bath after Mr. Elliot did the same? I know it says she had sacrificed, for the young man's sake, the possibility of scheming longer for Sir Walter but I thought Mr. Elliot had been controlling her - so he must have been a rather unsympathetic person in her eyes. I thought she should have been glad that Mr. Elliot had left the town so she could go on entangeling Sir Walter.
2. Why is she heard of as established under his protection in London when she was under his control in Bath? Which leads to the next question:
3. What attracts Mr. Elliot in Mrs. Clay? She is neither handsome nor rich - so why bother at all?
Perhaps I was too occupied with Anne and Frederick that I missed the hints given on those two creatures - I would be glad if you could open my eyes! ;o)
