Christian Names and Marzipan   Written by Tessa (10/26/2008 11:44 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Marzipan, penned by CarolTS
Are you new?

I think P2 really shows the disconnect between Ann's thinking and her father and older sisters.

Notice in the book that though Elizabeth refers to Mrs. Clay as "Penelope", Mrs. Clay never dares to call Elizabeth anything but "Miss Elliot." They do not "Christian name one and other immediately." For all their intimacy, Elizabeth maintains the distinction in rank between them.

BTW, marzipan is tastes very sweet - a little goes along way. It is basically ground almonds and sugar bound together with a little scented water. It is mostly used for decoration - a sort of candy modeling clay. If you eat too much of it, the sweetness quickly overwhelms. It's interesting that the makers of P2 felt that Elizabeth's favorite candy would be all show and a sickeningly sweet substance.
