However, the Omniscient Narrator does qualify Anne and CW's romance with: "half the sum of attraction...might have been enough", so I take it that there was considerably more than the "minimum necessary" amount of attraction between the two of them!.

In a way, I think Captain Benwick is the male equivalent of Harriet Smith in "Emma": Harriet was one of those, who, having once begun, would be always in love. CB is ready to fall in love with any reasonably attractive girl who spends enough time with him.
