IMHO Anne never ever says...   Written by Moni (10/26/2008 7:07 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Anne after Lyme, penned by Deborah Y
Are you new?

she doesn't want the Captain, she just thinks he doesn't want her. And so far it has looked pretty much like that. She gets closure in the form of change and distance from him, this is undeniable, and we can see this in the text. Anne is not the same person she started out being, and it appears the Captain has changed too, due to experiences of his own.

It's a matter of whether she can have the Captain or not, so to speak, as she has major barriers of class and prejudice to surmount in her guardians, especially when considering the value of her relationship to Lady Russell. However much we might think Anne can do what she wants, she can't. She plays the waiting game, never even knowing it will bring her what she thinks she wants.

I agree with RachelG, that this is not a girl meets boy only story, and I think it's intriguing the tension is loosened with the early knowings of Anne's thoughts by the reader. I think the novel is about Anne more than anything else. I loved reading this post too, as it made me think, and am going to keep this in mind as we go along, and see how it turns out!;-))
