I wonder about this too.


Perhaps Captain Benwick felt sorry for Louisa when he became aware that Captain Wentworth did not care for her and 'dumped' her.
Perhaps he became aware of something then, or recalled something from his days as first Lieutenant of the Laconia, that warned him off Anne.
He is a sensitive and romantic character, and some explanation for the transference of his admiration from the animating and intelligent Anne to the unconscious Louisa is needed, I think.
