IMO,8 years are not too long for CW to have hard feelings against Anne. Some people never talk to friends/family again for decades. After all, CW was at sea, and according to his previous accounts of his ships (ch 6, I think), he didn't like women on board. So his contacts with women were severely limited, and his memories were probably all about Anne. It's like CW was in isolation all these years... Self-imposed exile, if you will. Where else could be more isolating than being at sea without his beloved... :-) Eight years of torture, is all I can say :-)
