There's another side to the coin that perhaps CW hadn't considered. All this time he was bemoaning the fact that Anne had waffled in her commitment to him. What he hadn't considered was the fact that Anne could've rejected him altogether. That, she did not. The fact that at one point she did accept his proposal -- even though she then withdrew -- should've been a silver lining that CW could take to mean that there is still HOPE for him. Although a second proposal would've not been common in that era, if their love was strong enough, it could withstand social norms, no?
