Am I right in assuming Written by MarianneR (10/23/2008 5:17 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, "Carteret" is the family name or surname, penned by JulieW

that the Viscount is the son of an Earl and the Earl the son of a Marquis etc. so that after many years and descendants a title would be extinct? I remember when talking about the Baronetage of Sir Walter there was the expression of extinct titles.
