I agree that the scene at the pianoforte was a disaster for CW, made awfully worse when he declined to sit down again after Anne offered up the seat (ch 8). It was truly, in Anne's words, nothing but a "ceremonial grace." As I have mentioned somewhere before (link below), I think that CW should have invited Anne to join in their conversation. If there was ANYONE in the entire room who could prevent Anne's further isolation, it was CW. And he failed to do so.
