I think that makes sense because we see in Ch 12 that CW was continually bashing himself. He was openly showing his guilt and accepting responsibility (partial, at least) for Louisa's foolishness.

Maybe he'd thought that by telling her to be firm, it would improve her character, but the reverse had happened. Unfortunately for him, Louisa did not have the maturity of mind to judge what she should be firm on, and what she should not. Now that I've seen all those scary photos of the Granny's Teeth, jumping off those steps was er, [various words deleted] indeed.

Interestingly, I wonder if Louisa's mindset caused CW to reconsider his harsh attitude toward Anne. Hmmm...
