Oh, I do love the report of all the "improvements" the Crofts made at Kellynch. I donīt know where to start. Here are just a few:
Concerning the laundry-door - The wonder was, how any family upon earth could bear with the inconvenience of its opening as it did so long! Can you imagine Sir Walter E. going through the laundry-door? No wonder it was never mended...
Concerning the mirrors - Such a number of looking-glasses! oh Lord! there was no getting away from oneself. What would Sir Walter say if he knew his new tenant only needed a little shaving glass in one corner?
Concerning the breakfast-room chimney - it smokes a little, I grant you, but it is only when the wind is due north and blows hard, which may not happen three times a winter. Now this astonishes me most - how could Sir Walter live with a smoking chimney? Or did he sleep so long that he actually never used his breakfast-room? Any ideas?
