...flatter, write Elizabeth's letters, reply to the inviations, accompany Elizabeth around Bath, pass on Miss Elliot's orders to servents, and flatter; I wonder.

I also doubt Mrs Clay was a companion paid in money, as her father Mr Shepard had emphasized the Elliots' need to economize.
