In a fight at sea, it would not be his responsibility to deal with the dead and injured, but to keep the whole thing going :-) Having said that, I think his response reflects how aghast he is at the way he has somehow led a vulnerable young woman into putting herself at risk. It is not a situation that reflects his experience at sea at all.

It does reflect Anne's - remember how she took charge when little Charles fell out the tree?
