I did not mean to imply phrases like 'grown so steady' are not ironic; given Capt. Wentworth's expression before talking kindly to Mrs Musgrove.
Well, perhaps JA does adopt a comic (sarcastic ?) tone, making fun of the narrowness of view of women who have not extended their horizon.

In the group read, I have been tracking the women around Anne; but, at times, I fear make myself unintelligble.
