For what it's worth, I looked up the pronunciation of Giaour. Both Chambers and OED give it as "jowr" (vowel rhymes with cow).


It is a Turkish word, derived from Persian. It's meaning according to Chambers is "an infidel, a term applied by the Turks to all who are not of their own religion.."
