There is always something new to be learned.   Written by Rachel G (10/17/2008 10:49 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, The latter is how I pronounce it, and how it, penned by Susan L
Are you new?

I was intrigued by your response, as I would certainly have pronounced it Ke-lynch, with the stress on the second syllable.

However I now live in Somerset, though not from the county originally. I happen to have a carpenter doing some work for me at the moment who is a Somerset man born and bred, and who's speech is richly infused with the sounds and cadences of the distinctive local accent and dialect.

I wrote down the word "Kellynch" and asked him how he would pronounce it if he saw it as a place name on a road sign somewhere around here. He instantly replied: "Ke-lynch", putting the stress on the first syllable. When I pressed him further, he said that was the only way to pronounce it that made any sense to him.

That is good enough for me! I don't trust film makers to get absolutely everything right, but when I get it from a man who speaks "Zummerset" I am happy to say Kellynch from now on.
