...was the first time the Musgroves had mourned over Dick, despite the ON's contention that he was "scarcely at all regretted", but now I look at it, I think you may be right! We are told that it's been "a long interval" since Mrs. Musgrove last looked at her son's letters.

I totally agree that JA was being her ironic self in this passage, but irony and sarcasm, like any other kind of humour, can go too far, and I'm one of those who feels that this is the case here.
