...a rather dramatic view of the Cobb:

I've visited Lyme many times and I've never had the courage to walk upon the uppermost part of the Cobb,as they do in P2. Especially in the winter when the waves are crashing about.

And here is Joan Hassell's woodcut illustration for the Folio Society edition of JA's works, which uses the alternative flight of steps to Granny's Teeth.(the ones I always use!)


In an address to the Jane Austen Society in 1972 about her wonderful illustrations she said this:

For Persuasion there was another visit to Bath and to Lyme Regis. At the moment one sees the unrailed steps of the Cobb , the mechanics of Louisa's accident become quite clear and I hope it is so in my picture.
