no one knew Anne and CW's past so when there was "no intercourse but what the commonest civility required." (Chap 8), no one saw it as bad manners. He behaved in a manner expected of a very new acquaintance. I'm not sure The Uppercross folks even needed to be self absorbed, though I think it did help it to go unnoticed.
