I believe it was fairly common for unmarried women to officially "give up dancing" after a certain age, and IIRC, both JA and Cassandra did it. The same rule did *not* seem to apply to men (surprise, surprise :-() Of course, Anne giving up dancing is another sign that she already considers herself a spinster, or well on the way to being one. (I'll bet Elizabeth has not given up dancing!)
