Mrs Croft and Anne.   Written by Mandy N (10/15/2008 5:08 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Mrs Croft as a model, penned by MarianneR
Are you new?

Good thoughts ! Anne is evidently present in his thoughts when he specifies to his sister, Sophia the type of woman he is looking to marry; 'A strong mind, with sweetness of manner'.

Sophie Croft appears a kindly, strong minded lady. She has led a life at sea atypical of most Regency ladies and is atypical of Regency women like the Musgrove ladies, being well travelled and used to impermanent homes.
To me, an underlying theme of JA's novels appears the insecurity of married and unmarried women lacking independent fortune; perhaps Sophie Croft does defy the typical women of Regency society. Also, she and Admiral Croft appear to share one of the few happy marriages in Austen.
