Yep, that's the way I see it! :-)   Written by Line (10/15/2008 2:09 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, If Line's points are spot on, then..., penned by Moni
Are you new?

It might help to imagine quotation marks around the sentence beginning with "She had used him ill...", and change the verb tense and pronouns a bit - i.e: "She used *me* ill...", etc., etc.

BTW, I think the next small paragraph is also *strictly* CW's POV.
"[(At the time) I was] most warmly attached to her, and [have] never seen a woman since whom [I] thought her equal; but, except from some natural sensation of curiosity, [I have] no desire of meeting her again. Her power with [me is] gone for ever."

After that, although it's still CW under discussion, we attain a little distance because the Omniscient Narrator partly takes over again.

I agree that there are plenty of nuances in JA's work - they make me want to raid the silverware drawer for a good fork to pin the wriggly things down while I examine them! :-)

I'm not sure I quite understand the rest of your post, Moni. If I understand you right, I agree that CW's inner attitude is showing itself outwardly, whether he wants it to or not, especially to someone as attuned to him as Anne is. It's also possible that she is reading his thoughts accurately at this point, partly because she is an excellent observer and partly because she used to know him so well, but I still think that these 6 sentences are a direct window into his thoughts, not just someone else's interpretation of them.
