The Crofts   Written by Rae (10/15/2008 2:03 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I just love the Crofts!, penned by JoAnn
Are you new?

Yes, I agree with you, they are delightful (and will forever be Fiona Shaw and John Woodvine for me!).

They are also important in terms of working out what is in Wentworth's head - as you say, his sister is an admirable woman and must at some level have influenced his choice in women. Their marriage is also important as a model - they are the only truly happy couple Anne knows, and how did their marriage start?

We sailors, Miss Elliot, cannot afford to make long courtships in time of war. How many days was it, my dear, between the first time of my seeing you, and our sitting down together in our lodgings at North Yarmouth?

We do not know anything about the Admiral's rank at the time, and I would guess he was a Captain (we know he was not more than that as she mentions Captain Croft being away), but they did not mess about did they? A quick warm attachment leading to a long happy and mutually supportive marriage! Wentworth must have been quite young at the time, so he has had this model before him for most of his adult life.
