I doubt we will agree that this treatment of Anne is meritied or continually explainable.

To be shocked into inaction at first is one thing: to continue to act for weeks ,quite deliberately, as if they were almost perfect strangers is quite another. I do see his treatment of her as quite awful and inexcusable after the first 24 hours.
