My impression is 'poor old Asp' endured much damage in battle under fire from the heavily gunned French ship ; before HMS Asp under CW's command captured the prize.
I think Capt. Wentworth makes a careless, slightly sarcastic reference to France or the frigate when he refers to the Great Nation and downplays the danger and great battle that probably ensured beforehand.
