My impression (rightly or wrongly) is JA biographers focus more on Jane's older brothers; so I'm pleased B. Southam was able to make use of the letters of Frank and Charles to trace their navy careers.
I won't mind the book's padding on Darwin or Nelson & Lady Hamilton very much.

Jane Austen and the Navy does sound a worthwhile companion book. Thanks so much for this commentary, Rae. I've just bought a copy of this book. :-)

Think I can lay my hands directly lay my hands on a second-hand copy of Nelson's Navy or can access this link again.
