North Sea Station   Written by Tessa (10/14/2008 6:20 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Agree, wonderful insights !, penned by Mandy N
Are you new?

If it was winter time, the North Sea Station could be a rough one - ice burgs, freezing spray, ice-covered decks and generally dirty weather. Even today it can be pretty rough.

If Mrs. Croft had been aboard, she probably would have had to spend most of her time below, which would not be considered healthy or comfortable.

I can absolutely see how she and then Captain Croft would have thought that her lodging in Deal - which is in the East of England, in Kent, on the English Channel - would make much more sense than staying aboard the ship. Deal used to be one of the busiest ports in England and could very likely have been the home port of Captain Croft's ship. Deal is also associated with the Royal Marines. It would be a logical port for ships on the North Sea.

She just missed him terribly after being use to spending so much time together. Though after spending a winter on the North Sea Station, she might have revised her opinions about the comfort of life aboard ship.
