Agree, wonderful insights !   Written by Mandy N (10/14/2008 4:23 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Wow - Thanks, Rae!, penned by Line
Are you new?

Sophie Croft has always struck me as an active, resouceful woman. I can imagine her assisting midshipmen with their letters or keeping a diary of her sea journeys to the places she mentions- the East Indies; to Ireland, Portugal and the Straits of Gibralter- places so far to the other ladies in the room.
Sophie Croft's words appear to affirm the pleasure and health of a seafaring life with her husband. She mentions the only time she felt unwell was the winter she spent at Deal while her husband (then Capt. Croft) was in the North Seas.
I am wondering about any significance of JA mentioning Deal. Any thoughts why Mrs Croft was at Deal rather than than on ship with her husband ?
