Attitude of Charles & Mary...   Written by Mandy N (10/14/2008 12:45 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Not impressed with both Charles and Mary here, penned by Lisa G
Are you new?

Charles and Mary were glad to take up Anne's proposal to nurse their injured child, while they set off in high spirits to attend a dinner party. Yet I agree Charles did appreciate Anne's proposal, and realised it was hard she be left by herself.
However, in JA's time, I believe it was a typical attitude to call upon single female relatives to attend wives lying-in or childcare. I'm not sure of JA's own views; but I think Anne's remark to Mary, 'Nursing does not belong to a man' reflected the use of single women of Anne Elliot's age within the family circle.
