...looking directly at her? I got the impression that the two tried to avoid looking at each other...

Ch 7: "Her eye half met Captain Wentworth's, a bow, a curtsey passed; she heard his voice..."

Her eyes "half met" CW's LOL. "She heard his voice" - was she turned away from him? Was she looking elsewhere?

It seemed that they hardly looked at each other. If I haven't seen someone in 8 years, it would take me a second look to recognize them. I would usually not recognize their fine features immediately :-)
