Patrick O'Brian   Written by Rachel G (10/14/2008 11:22 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Some suggestions, penned by Rae
Are you new?

I second the recommendation of Patrick O'Brian's splendid Aubrey-Maturin series of novels. O'Brian was very highly regarded for the accuracy of his research and the vividness of his storytelling. He was a great fan of Austen which shows in his work IMO; his novels are full of humour and ironic observation.

This is a very long series of 20 books which it is worth tackling in order. For those lacking stamina the first of the series, "Master and Commander", is set in 1800 and gives a great insight into naval life.

Thank you so much for posting all this naval information Rae - it is really adding to my enjoyment.
