Are there many ways to view this?   Written by JanELT (10/13/2008 7:21 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Apparently Mary didn't overhear,, penned by Marieke
Are you new?

Mary said:Henrietta asked him what he thought of you, when they went away, and he said, "You were so altered he should not have known you again."

I don't get where it said in the text that Henrietta told Mary what CW said. I thought the text merely stated that Henrietta and CW had a conversation but it did not say how Mary found out about it. Or does it?

My opinion is that Mary heard the conversation but it wasn't meant for her to hear it. I was thinking she was probably nosy. Your opinion is that Henrietta told Mary. Other possibilities exist:

- Maybe Henrietta told Louisa and Louisa told Mary
- Maybe Mary was in the conversation
- ???

Actually the first time I ever read that passage, I had thought that CW said it in Mary's face. However, on subsequent re-reads I thought it more likely that CW had no idea little birds would carry the message to Anne's ears...
