Look at it from his POV

Hey, everyone: *She* dumped *him*! In these early scenes, he has no reason to believe that she's still in love with him and has been all these years. Readers feel angry on her behalf because JA puts us totally in her head, so we know that every slightest coldness on his part is like a stab in the heart for Anne. But he doesn't know that. As far as he's concerned -- as far as runs the little narrative that he's constructed for himself so that he wouldn't spend eight years torturing himself with the confidence-sapping thought, "The most wonderful person in the world doesn't want to marry me" -- she's a weak-willed woman who didn't love him all that much to begin with (at least not enough to stand up to her snobbish relatives) and who, for all he knows, has stayed single all these years because no one grand enough to satisfy her family ever came along to propose to her. And look at her behavior from his point of view: she skips the first chance she has to meet him on the mighty thin pretext of hanging out with a sick nephew; she barely speaks to him when they're together, even when they're the only two adults in the room; she takes pains to walk with anyone but him when they're all out walking. He might be excused for thinking that she's just as unhappy about seeing him again as he (thinks he) is. |
