to marry a safe, unexciting guy whom you're mildly fond of when you don't have anything else to compare your feelings to. It's quite another thing to marry such a guy when you've experienced intense passion with someone else. Unlike Charlotte Lucas (as far as we know! But no doubt someone is working on a P&P prequel about Charlotte's lost love as we speak), Anne would always have known what she was missing.
