I think the capture of the French frigate establishes Wentworth as a self-reliant, professional man prepared to take risks.
Presumably, the fact Wentworth is a navy officer would ensure his popularity amongst JA's readers, who had good reason to be grateful to the Navy, with recent wars against France.
